Billy and Nick

by admin

On the surface, it appeared to be the start of a wonderful relationship. Florida coach Billy Donovan gained a verbal commitment from Nick Calathes when Calathes was a sophomore in high school, promising him the opportunity to compete for national championships on a yearly basis. Now, it turns out, Calathes might leave Florida without even playing in the NCAA Tournament. Calathes entered his name into the NBA draft pool on Monday, putting serious doubt into whether the … Read More »

UF denies report

A text message from a Florida athletic department official said there is “no truth” to an Orlando television report that Billy Donovan will resign to take the head coaching position at Kentucky. The report, from Orlando’s Fox 35, attributed a source close to the Kentucky athletic program. http://www.myfoxorlando.com/dpp/news/032709source_donovan_leaving_UCF

More flight tracking

by admin

Two private plans left St. Augustine airport Friday morning. Both are twin-jet Cessnas. One is headed to Lexignton, Ky., and set to touch down at 1:21 p.m. Another is headed to Richmond (Va.) International Airport and landed about two hours ago. The Lexington-Herald Leader contacted Billy Donovan’s father and said that Donovan was at his vacation home in Crescent Beach, a town that neighbors St. Augustine. Could Florida coach Billy Donovan and athletic director Jeremy … Read More »

Billy D’s future

by admin

Rumblings in the Bluegrass State have Billy Gillispie out as Kentucky basketball coach as soon as Friday, with Florida coach Billy Donovan already agreeing in principle to become his hand-picked successor. A private plane was tracked from going to Gainesville to Montgomery Airport in Mount Sterling, Ky. (a small airport outside of Lexington) to South Bend, Ind., (where Kentucky played Notre Dame) on Wednesday. Of course, that plane could have been carrying equine supplies. Or it could … Read More »

Kadji out

by admin

Florida freshman center Kenny Kadji will miss tonight’s NIT quarterfinal game against Penn State after suffering a concussion Monday in practice. The 6-foot-10 Kadji is averaging 4.4 points and 2.7 rebounds this season. The loss of Kadji leaves Florida thin on the bench tonight. With freshman forward Allan Chaney suspended for the rest of the season, the only scholarship reserves available off the bench are sophomore forward Chandler Parsons, freshman forward Eloy Vargas and freshman guard Ray Shipman.

Preston returns

by admin

One of the subplots of Florida’s NIT quarterfinal game against Penn State is the return of former Florida assistant coach Lewis Preston. Preston’s tenure at Florida was brief (2006-08) considering several of Donovan’s prior lieutenants had stayed for longer periods. Donovan and assistants Anthony Grant and Donnie Jones spent more than 10 years together before Grant left to become a head coach at Virginia Commonwealth in 2006. A year later, Jones left to become a head coach at Marshall. … Read More »

A head scratcher

by admin

Let’s begin by saying that Florida is still alive to win an NIT title, something the school has never done in history. I don’t know if chants of “We’re No. 66″ would ease the pain of the Gator Nation. Especially when you consider Florida fans are going through their second straight season of NCAA Tournament withdrawal. That made Florida coach Billy Donovan’s response to a question Monday afternoon all the more surprising. When asked … Read More »

Chaney suspended

by admin

Florida freshman forward Allan Chaney has been suspended for the rest of the season, coach Billy Donovan said following UF’s 74-60 win over Miami. Chaney, already out for the season injury-wise with a sprained arch, was not on the team bench Friday night. “I am not going to go into the details of it,” Donovan said. “First of all he is injured but there are other things that he’s dealt with. But he will not be on the … Read More »

Rivalry renewed

by admin

When Florida and Miami play later Friday evening, it will renew a rivalry between schools that have deeper traditions competing on football and baseball fields. Basketball-wise, these schools don’t have much recent history. Consider that from 1991-2002, Florida and Miami didn’t play each other. There have been three games since, with Florida winning two, including one in double-overtime at the Orange Bowl Classic in downtown Miami. Florida coach Billy Donovan said he and Miami coach Frank … Read More »

Fricke’s return

by admin

A bright spot to what has been a disappointing Florida basketball season was Wednesday night’s return of walk-on sophomore guard Hudson Fricke. Fricke was medically cleared to play Wednesday morning after breaking both wrists during a freak weight-lifting accident. It happened when Fricke was bench pressing fee weights on an exercise ball last November during a strength and conditioning drill. Fricke said the exercise ball burst as he was bringing the bar down. “Any time I’m going … Read More »
