The Atlanta Journal-Constitution covered the firing of Georgia coach Dennis Felton at length Friday, including a list of potential candidates to replace Felton.
As expected, current Virginia Commonwealth coach and former Florida assistant Anthony Grant was the first candidate mentioned. There were some reports that Grant was a shoo-in to replace Felton at the end of last season before Georgia miraculously turned things around and won the Southeastern Conference Tournament.
But the AJC threw out another surprise name as a potential replacement, …

The Southeastern Conference didn’t help its sagging hoops reputation over the weekend, with Tennessee suffering a homecourt loss to Memphis and LSU suffering a homecourt loss to Xavier in a couple of important non-conference games.
But part of the reason for the SEC’s struggles may have to do with the relative youth and inexperience of the league. Two-thirds of the league is in the bottom 70 of Ken Pomeroy’s Division I rankings of teams based on team …

I fielded a few e-mails this week wondering why Florida coach Billy Donovan didn’t take more responsibility for the final play of UF’s 70-69 loss against South Carolina.
True, Donovan didn’t immediately blame himself for the late defensive breakdown that resulted in Zam Fredrick’s buzzer-beating layin. But he acknowledged Friday that his players weren’t the only ones who needed to build off the mistake.
“I’m no different from those guys,” Donovan said. “What did I …

Florida junior Dan Werner revealed Monday that he’s been playing the past few weeks with an avulsion fracture in his right middle finger and a jammed left thumb.
Werner said he injured the finger going for a rebound in Florida’s Southeastern Conference opener Jan. 11 against Ole Miss.
Since the injury, Werner is shooting 35.4 percent (11-31) from the floor and 33.3 percent (4-12) from 3-point range.
Asked whether the injury was affecting his shooting stroke, Werner responded: “I don’t want to make …

There are three certainties in life – death, taxes and construction on Georgia highways. Whether it’s I-75 or I-95, it always seems like you are running into those annoying work zones and orange cones. So before I hit the road back to Gainesville, some musings from the Palmetto State:
* It’s easy to lay the blame on Florida junior Dan Werner for his last-second gaffe, but coaching staffs get paid hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions of dollars to prepare for worst-case …

Congratulations are in order for Florida senior guard Walter Hodge and his wife, Kayla. The couple is expecting its second child in March, Hodge confirmed Monday. Walter and Kayla already have a 2-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Kaylanis. Hodge had his daughter’s nickname “Kiki” shaved on the side of his head during last November’s CBE Classic in Kansas City, Mo.
Hodge said the couple already found out through a sonogram that their next child will be a boy.
“We’re trying to …

Florida returned to the Top 25 rankings Monday afternoon.
The Gators (16-2), who have won 10 straight, are at No. 24 in the Associated Press poll with 175 votes. Florida’s lone losses this season have come against current No. 8 Syracuse and Florida State, which received 34 votes this afternoon.
Florida fell out of the poll following a 57-55 loss at FSU last Dec. 7.
Asked about the possibility of being ranked Monday afternoon, Florida …

Here’s a case of turning lemonade into lemons. One of my favorite stops at Auburn is the drug store on Toomer’s Corner, which serves the best freshly-squeezed lemonade in the Southeast. But to my disgust, after parking my car and making the half-mile walk from Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum, I discovered that Toomer’s Drug Store closes at 5 p.m. on weekdays. I got there about 45 minutes too late. At least the walk was good exercise.
Some random …

Florida freshman forward Allan Chaney did not make the trip for Wednesday night’s game against Auburn due to back spasms.
Chaney had missed the previous two practices with back spasms. The Florida training staff is hopeful that with the additional rest, Chaney will be available for Florida’s next game Saturday at home against Arkansas.
Without Chaney, Florda will have nine scholarship players available for the Auburn game. Freshman guard Erving Walker is under-the-weather with flu-like symptoms, but is in uniform …
