OB Classic extras

by admin

Here are a few extra tidbits from Sunday’s 74-45 win over Winthrop at Sunday night’s Orange Bowl Classic in Sunrise: * Winthrop coach Randy Peale was effusive in his praise of Florida’s ability to pass the basketball and sophomore point guard Nick Calathes following the game. Peale, who has already faced North Carolina State, South Carolina and Davidson this season, rates Calathes ahead of returning All-American Stephen Curry as the best guard he’s seen this season. “We’ve played Curry … Read More »

Talking points

OK, so my assessment may have been a little harsh following Florida’s 88-81 escape against Georgia Southern, but to go life and death with a 3-6 team this late in the non-conference schedule is somewhat alarming. If you want some perspective, Georgia Southern lost 97-54 to Duke, which tells you how far the Gators are from becoming a Sweet 16 team. Some other thoughts: * Florida coach Billy Donovan was guarded in his comments about his team’s performance following the … Read More »

Bye, bye dome

by admin

A significant part of Florida basketball history was demolished into rubble when the RCA Dome was imploded Saturday morning. Florida won its first national basketball title at the dome in Indianapolis in 2006. Six years earlier in 2000, Florida coach Billy Donovan led the Gators to the Final Four in the same building. Florida lost to Michigan State in the finals that year. The Gators purchased the floors from both Final Four appearances, which hang on the … Read More »

Cross on air

Fans who tune into tonight’s Florida-UCF game on the Gator radio network will be in for a surprise. Former Gator guard Dan Cross, a member of Florida’s first Final Four team in 1994, will handle color commentary duties alongside play-by-play man Mick Hubert. It’s the first of seven games that Cross is scheduled to broadcast this season. Cross had dabbled in broadcasting during a 10-year basketball career overseas, but will call his first college basketball game Saturday. … Read More »

Gator NBA gathering

by admin

Had a chance to catch up with three former Gators in the NBA when the Knicks and Hawks played in Atlanta on Friday night at Phillips Arena. The battle in the pivot between former Gator big men was a wash. Hawks center AlHorford finished with 14 points and 9 rebounds and Knicks center David Lee had 15 points and 11 boards. Former Gator point guard Anthony Roberson also played for the Knicks, but didn’t score in … Read More »

Small, medium or large?

by admin

On the media notes for Sunday’s game against Florida State, freshman Erving Walker was the projected starter in a three-guard lineup with Nick Calathes and Walter Hodge. But UF coach Billy Donovan didn’t sound like he was leaning toward that lineup when he talked before the game Tuesday. Donovan said he went with the smaller lineup against Florida A&M because the Rattlers started four guards. But against an FSU starting lineup … Read More »
