Walk-on Hudson Fricke’s two broken wrists occurred when a 95-pound weight caused an exercise ball to burst.
In confirming the nature of the accident, Florida coach Billy Donovan was emotional, saying Fricke had mentioned he was thankful it was him and not junior forward Dan Werner, who was up next in the drill.
“A guy with two broken wrists to make a comment like
that may have been one of the greatest acts of unselfishness I’ve ever
seen in …

Florida junior forward Dan Werner said he wasn’t overly concerned about the foul trouble he ran into Monday and Tuesday at the O’Reilly Auto Parts/CBE Classic in Kansas City.
Werner fouled out of both games. After scoring just eight points
in 22-foul plagued minutes Monday night against Syracuse, Werner was
more productive Tuesday night, scoring 13 points against Washington on
Tuesday night in 26 minutes.
“I’m not worried,” Werner said. “I just felt like …

More on Hodge
You may have noticed on TV that Walter Hodge had the name “kiki” shaved in script letters on the right side of his head. That’s for his two-and-a-half year old daughter, Kaylanis, who was watching the game with Hodge’s wife back home in their native Puerto Rico.
“It’s something she can look at on TV and point at,” Hodge said. “She gets all excited and calls out ‘Daddy! Daddy!’”
Hodge …

Florida coach Billy Donovan is considering starting
freshman Allan Chaney tonight at small forward over Chandler Parsons.
The move is being contemplated to add some bulk across the frontline to deal with Washington’s 6-foot-7, 250-pound forward Jon Brockman and is not considered a permanent change. Chaney had seven points and four steals off the bench Monday night against Syracuse.
Also, the Gators announced they have officially received letters
of intent from the rest of their 2009 Class, with 6-foot-10 …

Some impressions from Day 1 of the O’Reilly Auto Parts Classic
— Though Alex Tyus scored a career-best 24 points against
Syracuse, Florida coach Billy Donovan tempered his enthusiasm about the
sophomore center’s performance following the game. “I’m anxious to look
at the film,” Donovan said. “Some people may see 24 points but I look
at the fact that (Arinze) Onuaku gets 12 rebounds, Paul Harris gets 11
rebounds. Sometimes, scoring is a matter of being in the right place at
the right …

Had a chance to venture around Kansas City a bit on Sunday because my flight arrived early. It’s really a quaint downtown area filled with fountains and marble and brick buildings. The downtown hotel is about four blocks from the Sprint Center, where the Gators will face Syracuse later tonight. There’s a decent sports bar across the street from the arena called McFadden’s, where I watched some NFL games Sunday. Most of the Chiefs fans I ran into at the …

Florida coach Billy Donovan said he doesn’t intend to place any restrictions on where sophomore guard Jai Lucas transfers, even if it’s within the Southeastern Conference.
“I’ve never been a big believer of preventing somebody from going to whatever school,” Donovan said. “Now if it was something I felt like that tampering was going on or maybe something to do with maybe the kid wanting to leave, then maybe I’d say that school was off limits. But Jai …

Here’s what Florida sophomore guard Nick Calathes had to say about the signing of guard Kenny Boynton and whether he looked forward to possibly playing with Boynton next season.
“He’s a heckuva player,” Calathes said. “I think he was like No. 6 in the country or something like that. He’s going to be a big help for us. I definitely look forward to it, but I think I’m more focused on this season. Then after this season, we’ll …

Had a chance to finally catch up with John Lucas, the former NBA
point guard/coach and father of recent Florida transfer Jai Lucas.
The elder Lucas re-iterated that handling the ball more was an issue and that his son also was homesick.
“I think over the summer he felt it a lot, wanting to be home more and closer to his family,” John said.
John Lucas said he’s received several calls, including from Big
12 Conference schools Oklahoma, Texas …
