Boynton update

by admin

Kenny Boynton is due to announce his oral commitment at 6:30 tonight on ESPNU. Boynton (6-foot-2, 185 pounds) took his official visit to Florida over the weekend, leading to speculation that the Class of 2009 standout guard from Plantation-American High school will commit to the Gators. However, sources that I’ve talked to say that both Georgia Tech and Duke remain in the mix. Boynton has canceled his visit to Texas this weekend. I had a … Read More »

Werner knows Knowshon

by admin

Before Florida faces Georgia in football Saturday afternoon at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, coach Urban Meyer could pay a visit to the basketball facility for some inside information. UF junior forward Dan Werner played on the same eighth-grade youth football team with star Georgia tailback Knowshon Moreno in Middletown, N.J. – the Middletown Eagles. Werner was a 5-foot-10 quarterback on the team. Moreno played on both sides of the ball. Werner recalled one scrimmage when Moreno … Read More »

Practice report

Florida suffered another blow to its practice depth over the weekend when freshman forward Allan Chaney suffered a sprained hand in practice Saturday afternoon. With Vernon Macklin (ankle) and Adam Allen (knee) also out, the Gators practiced with 10 players Saturday afternoon. I talked at length with freshman Erving Walker about his ability to get shots up despite his lack of height (5-foot-8) and his New York City roots for a feature story that will run … Read More »

Billy D on three guards

by admin

Last season, with limited options, Florida started Jai Lucas, Walter Hodge and Nick Calathes in what was essentially a three-guard starting lineup. Granted, Nick Calathes had the size (between 6-foot-5, 6-6) to play the wing but often played at the point because of his court-vision skills, leaving smaller guard Walter Hodge (6-1) and Jai Lucas (5-11) off the ball. I asked Billy what he felt about the three-guard starting lineup last season. Here’s his response: “I … Read More »

Allen strains MCL

by admin

Just got back from the Gator Practice facility where Florida sophomore Adam Allen arrived at Saturday morning’s practice on crutches. Good news for Allen and for Gator fans, Allen suffered a strained MCL ligament in his left knee and will be out a week to 10 days, according to coach Billy Donovan. “We were really concerned it was going to be some kind of tear of the meniscus or tear of the tendon, but it’s not that way at all,” Donovan said. “It looks like it’s … Read More »

Billy on Lute

by admin

Florida coach Billy Donovan weighed in on Arizona coach Lute Olsen’s retirement after 34 years as a head coach in college basketball: “He built it into an incredible program over a 25-year period and that’s a long time for what he’s done. And I think when you do that, you kind of go out how you would like to go out. I think for him there were some health issues, there were some family issues for whatever reason it’s … Read More »

SEC media days, Day 2

by admin

Highlights of Day 2 of SEC media days included Kentucky sophomore forward Patrick Patterson sporting an old-school hairdo (the ‘fro added at least a few inches on his 6-foot-9 frame) and Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie being a little more relaxed (we learned that he’s quite a pool shark.) Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy and his players didn’t make it because of mechanical problems that were detected before boarding their charter flight to Birmingham. Florida coaches Billy Donovan … Read More »

Keeping up with the zebras

by admin

Each year, Southeastern Conference director of officials Gerald Boudreaux does an excellent job filling us in on the various rules changes and points of emphasis. There’s a new somewhat convoluted way of classifying technical fouls (I warn you, you will be quizzed on this) and of course the obvious change in the 3-point line this season (back to 20 feet, 9 inches). Anyway, here’s what Boudreaux went over with us Wednesday morning. Points … Read More »

SEC Media Days, Day 1

by admin

Just wrapped up the first day of interviews for SEC media day. No, Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl didn’t wear an orange jacket, instead opting to show his school colors with a creamsickle orange and white striped tie. But Pearl did pay a nice compliment to Billy Donovan, noting that the league has taken on Donovan’s personality. “The SEC, it is wide open, it is up tempo, it is fast-paced, it is spread, it is ball screens and … Read More »
