It appears that Midnight Madness at Florida has gone the way of the Great Pumpkin and the duck-billed platypus.
For the second straight year, Florida has scrapped the once annual mid-October basketball event, and from my understanding there are no plans to bring it back any time soon. Instead, Florida is planning a fan-player interactive event to be held the week of Gator Growl, before the homecoming game Oct. 25 against Kentucky.

Over the summer, I talked with Southeastern Conference associate commissioner Charles Bloom about the league’s new TV deal. At the time, the SEC was still mulling launching its own network, but Bloom foreshadowed one of its priorities for television exposure. “Expect it to be heavy on basketball,” Bloom said. “That’s what the coaches, the administrators, are looking for.” The new deal with ESPN and ABC will play immediate dividends when it comes to men’s basketball exposure.
