Class of 2009 Florida basketball commitment DeShawn Painter told me
Thursday that he’s looking forward to signing a letter of intent to UF
this fall.
The 6-foot-9, 210-pound Painter struggled with foul trouble and did not play down the stretch for the Norfolk, Va.-based Boo Williams Summer League All-Stars in a quarterfinal loss at the Disney AAU 17-under national championships.
“It feels good going to Florida,” Painter said. “We’re just coming off a tough loss but just my …

Add Winthrop to the 2008-09 Florida men’s basketball schedule.
Florida will face Winthrop on Dec. 28 at the Metro PCS Orange Bowl Basketball Classic. The event will again be held at the BankAtantic Center in Sunrise, a Fort Lauderdale suburb.
Winthrop should give the Gators a decent test before Southeastern Conference play. The Golden Eagles have made seven NCAA Tournament appearances since 1999, developing into a program that’s emerged as a mid-major power. Last year, …

At the Reebok Summer Championships in Las Vegas, Florida coach Billy Donovan and assistant Rob Lanier had their eyes locked on a pair of prized in-state recruits. Donovan and Lanier were in town Tuesday to watch Team Breakdown, which started the backcourt tandem of Kenny Boynton (6-foot-2, American Heritage, Plantation) and Brandon Knight (6-3, 170 pounds, Coral Springs, Pine Ridge). Both players rose to the occasion. Boynton had 33 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals, leading Team …

Florida coach Billy Donovan said that he spoke with former UF guard Teddy Dupay briefly following his arrest on charges of rape, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated assault.
“He feels like he needs to take care of some things and that maybe the story that’s out there is not all truthful,” Donovan said during Wednesday’s SEC summer basketball teleconference.
“Anyone that you know in a situation like that, you feel for them. It’s a difficult situation, but at the same time it …

Here’s a look at how some former Gators are faring in NBA summer-league play:
Marreese Speights – Off to an impressive start, averaging 18.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots in two games for the Philadelphia 76ers in Las Vegas. Only early downside is turnovers (three per game). Joakim Noah – Was steady, but didn’t stand out for the Bulls last week in Orlando. Noah’s best effort was a 10-point, 12-rebound, three-assist game against the Orlando Magic. Chicago …

On the recruiting trail, it appears that Florida coach Billy Donovan showed slight interest in another prospect with famous basketball genes.
Donovan and Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski watched Class of 2010 forward Shawn Kemp Jr., play this week at the Reebok All-American camp in Philadelphia. The 6-foot-9 Kemp is the son of former Seattle SuperSonics forward Shawn Kemp, who infamously fathered at least eight different kids with six different mothers.
Here’s a link to the story on Kemp Jr.

John Calathes said his son, Florida sophomore guard Nick Calathes, remains in good spirits despite not making the Greek Olympic squad.
“Right now, he’s having a great time over there,” Calathes said. “He’s meeting a lot of new people and looking forward to playing with the under-21 team.”
In retrospect, John Calathes said his son should have probably arrived in Greece by June 14, but instead didn’t make it until June 20 because of passport issues …
