Former Gator Mike Miller was involved in the blockbuster trade that sent O.J. Mayo’s draft rights from Minnesota to Memphis late Thursday night. Judging from some some of Mayo’s recent problems with his recruitment at USC, maybe there’s a reason why the Timberwolves were leery about holding his draft rights. Former Florida center Marreese Speights will receive a hefty payday as
the 16th overall pick in the first round of the NBA draft.
Speights will likely receive a two-year, guaranteed contract in the $3-4 million range, according to the current NBA rookie salary grade that slots salaries based on where players are drafted.
Last year’s 16th overall pick, USC guard Nick Young, earned a shade more than $1.6 million in his rookie season with the Washington Wizards. …

While Florida guard Nick Calathes embarks for Greece on Saturday for a tremendous opportunity, the downside is that he will miss spending the second summer session with his UF basketball teammates. It’s raised the point as to whether Florida will benefit next season if Calathes plays in the Olympics for Greece this August. Nick Calathes said he wasn’t surprised that center Marreese Speights kept his name in the NBA draft, leaving Florida after his sophomore season. “I thought at the end of the year he was going to go,” Calathes said. “Just because a lot of people were talking about him going. Matt McCall has come a long way from his days washing Florida basketball uniforms and picking up lunches for other UF coaches.
This week, recently named Florida Atlantic coach Mike Jarvis hired McCall as one of three new assistant coaches on his staff.
McCall leaves for the Boca Raton campus this weekend. It’s been a steady climb for McCall, who earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Florida in his seven years involved with the UF basketball program.
