Is Calathes top SEC freshman?

by admin

The SEC freshman of the year race appeared to be narrowing down to Kentucky forward Patrick Patterson and Florida guard Nick Calathes. Calathes further made his case with a 22-point effort Wednesday night against Georgia. And now comes word that Patterson will miss the rest of the season with a stress fracture in his foot. Patterson finished his freshman season averaging 16.4 points and 7.7 rebounds as Kentucky’s lone low-post offensive threat. Calathes is averaging 15.5 points per … Read More »

Gators’ ninth life

by admin

For Florida to extend its NCAA Tournament string to 10 straight appearances, the magic number is nine. Since 1997-98, only one team in the Southeastern Conference with a regular-season conference record of 9-7 or better has been left out of the tournament. Tennessee didn’t make the tournament in 2002-03 despite a 17-12 overall record and 9-7 record in the SEC. The Gators would need to split its remaining four regular-season games to reach … Read More »

Noah’s next year

by admin

A few hours before Ben Wallace was shipped from the Chicago Bulls to the Cleveland Cavaliers, I chatted with Tyrone Green, Joakim Noah’s former New York City travel-league coach and close personal friend. Green spent time with Noah on Wednesday night following Chicago’s 110-102 overtime loss to the New Jersey Nets. “He’s in good spirits,” Green said. “Next year will be his year. It was just like when I first coached him in travel league, when … Read More »

Postcard from Nashville

by admin

If you’re like me, and you like music, then Nashville is one of your favorite cities. Music is everywhere, from music history (I’d recommend a tour of Ryman Auditorium downtown), live clubs (Second Fiddle and B.B. King’s are among my favorites) and concerts (Rick Springfield, of all people, is playing here this weekend). Even though I’m not a huge Country and Western guy, I can appreciate a good bluegrass band or some Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson on occasion. … Read More »

Pass the Charmin

Florida freshman point guard Jai Lucas said he didn’t take exception to coach Billy Donovan labeling his players as soft following Wednesday night’s loss against LSU. “That’s his job,” Lucas said. “When he sees something, the way coach Donovan is, he’s not holding anything back. What he says to the public, he’ll say to our face. So you really can’t say anything about it. We just have to change his demeanor and change the way … Read More »

Humphrey to Poland

by admin

All-time Florida leading 3-point shooter Lee Humphrey will resume his overseas playing career when he leaves for Poland this weekend to join Energa Czarni in the Polish League. The team is located in the northern Polish city of Slupsk, near the Baltic Sea. Humphrey will be the second American on the team, joining former UCLA guard Cedric Bozeman. Humphrey has spent the last month-and-a-half in his native Maryville, Tenn. When I called him Thursday night, … Read More »

Running with the Vols

by admin

Teams throughout the country face the same dilemma when playing No. 7 Tennessee. You can either roll the dice by running and playing to Tennessee’s strength going up and down the floor. Or you can slow the game down in an attempt to neutralize their speed and ability to hit open 3-pointers in transition. Florida coach Billy Donovan chose to run, because that’s what the Gators have done all season. Plus, with an undersized team, … Read More »

Allen OK with role

by admin

Florida freshman forward Adam Allen realizes in his first season he just has to be ready when he’s called upon. Allen, who didn’t play until the closing seconds against Vanderbilt, came back to play 11 minutes Saturday against Arkansas. The Vanderbilt game, Allen admitted Monday, surprised him. “I wasn’t really expecting that,” Allen said. “That’s the first time it ever happened to me. You just have to take your lumps as you go. I’m a freshman here. … Read More »

Postcard from Fayetteville

by admin

Here, in the Northwest corner of Arkansas, you can’t go more than an hour without hearing someone call for the Hogs. I heard the “woo … pig soey chant” eveywhere, at restaurants, bars, even at the local Walgreens. I travel here once every two years and each time I come back there are more buildings, more traffic. A Double-A baseball team, the Northwest Arkansas Naturals (a Kansas City Royals affiliate), will debut this spring at a newly built … Read More »
