NBA not on Calathes’ mind

by admin

Despite being projected in some Web sites as a mid-to-late first round draft pick in this June’s draft, Florida freshman guard Nick Calathes said the NBA is far from his mind. “I don’t think about that to be honest with you,” Calathes said. “I just want to finish this year out and win games and be the best team we can possibly be.” While the reply is not a flat-out guarantee that Calathes will return for his sophomore … Read More »

Billy on Grant, SC rumors

by admin

Here’s what Billy Donovan said when asked by the South Carolina media about the coaching credentials of former assistant Anthony Grant, the current head coach at Virginia Commonwealth who is a rumored candidate to replace retiring Dave Odom at USC: “Anthony is certainly someone that I have a close relationship with a great deal of respect for because of how hard he works. But I know that Anthony has things that he wants to get accomplished at Virginia Commonwealth. … Read More »

Lucas in uniform

by admin

Florida freshman starting guard Jai Lucas showed up in uniform and took part in the pre-game shoot-around prior to tonight’s game at South Carolina. It’s still unclear at this point if Lucas will start, but he will likely play tonight. Lucas, who walked into Colonial Arena with a slight limp, suffered a hyper-extended knee during Florida’s Saturday overtime win against Kentucky. Lucas did not practice Monday, but practiced Tuesday on a limited basis. Lucas has started all 19 … Read More »

Not free throws

by admin

While Florida has struggled making free throws down the stretch in recent games against Kentucky and Ole Miss, the Gators haven’t been as horrendous at the line as other schools in the Southeastern Conference. Of the 12 teams in the conference, seven are shooting below 70 percent. Florida ranks fifth in the conference at 70.5 percent. The three worst teams in the conference are currently shooting below 60 percent. Mississippi State ranks 10th at 59.8 … Read More »

Postcard from Memphis

by admin

Greetings from the land of the Delta Blues, Home of the King, etc., etc. I stay in Memphis for every Ole Miss road trip because it’s the closest major airport, about 70 miles east of the city. Memphis is one of my favorite southern cities because of the mix of blues and jazz Music on Beale Street. The Mississippi River lazily rolls along, separating Tennessee and Arkansas, with a few steel suspension bridges and slow-moving barges dotting the landscape. It’s a … Read More »

Reaching out to Noah

by admin

Florida coach Billy Donovan said he tried to call and text message Joakim Noah yesterday, but has yet to hear back from his former center who helped lead the Gators to back-to-back national titles. “I’d like to hear where he’s coming from on his end, just exactly what’s going on, and not to say that he’s right or wrong,” Donovan said at his weekly Monday press conference. “But I think the one thing these guys have to … Read More »

Long way to go

by admin

Here are some impressions from watching Florida 2008 signee Kenny Kadji play Friday night for IMG against Buchholz at the Bobcat Shootout: Early in the game, he was reluctant to mix things up inside, settling for jump shots on the perimeter instead of establishing position with his back to the basket. However, he did a nice job cleaning up missed shots on the offensive glass and blocking shots inside. He looks more like 6-foot-9 instead of … Read More »

Postcard from Tuscaloosa

by admin

Anyone who has ever been to Tuscaloosa knows the highlight of the trip isn’t visiting the Bear Bryant Museum or tossing stones into the Black Warrior River. It’s making that winding drive up Jug Factory Road, past Al’s Caskets and junkyards of abandoned school buses and tractor trailer rigs. There, you find something that’s well, dreamy. From the outside, Dreamland Bar-B-Que looks like a run-down shack, but inside you will find some of the most heavenly tasting, artery-clogging ribs … Read More »

Parsons makes trip

by admin

Florida freshman forward Chandler Parsons made the trip to Tuscaloosa and should be available for tonight’s game at Alabama. The 6-foot-9 Parsons missed Monday’s practice with flu-like symptoms. Parsons took part in limited drills during Tuesday morning’s shootaround. Parsons is averaging 10.1 points off the bench for Florida this season.
