Kitchen to FSU

by admin

Former Florida commitment Derwin Kitchen has resurfaced. The 6-foot-4 guard from Raines High in Jacksonville has signed a letter of intent to play at Florida State in 2008. Kitchen signed a letter of intent to play in Florida’s 2005 class, but was unable to enroll after failing to pass the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. Kitchen went to prep school for a year and then enrolled at St. Johns CC in the fall of 2006, but withdrew … Read More »

A true test?

by admin

Florida beat Stetson on Tuesday night to improve to 6-1 heading into its contest Friday in Tampa against Vermont. But one has to wonder if a schedule designed to bring a young team along gingerly will come back to haunt them. Florida won five of its six games against teams with a Ratings Index Percentage of 230 or lower. Hence, Florida’s strength of schedule currently ranks 291 out of 343 Division I teams. The strength of schedule will decrease by … Read More »

Numbers game

by admin

To some, the numbers don’t add up. Florida has 14 players to offer 13 men’s basketball scholarships in 2008 after signing five new players to letters of intent Tuesday. But Florida coach Billy Donovan has been around long enough to know how quickly things can change in college basketball. None of Donovan’s current nine scholarship players are seniors, but to expect them all to stay is pie-in-the-sky thinking. “I don’t think we’ve even … Read More »

Little consolation

by admin

A pair of former Florida assistants will coach against each other for the first time Sunday night. But it won’t be on the big stage that both envisioned. Arkansas, coached by former Florida assistant John Pelphrey, will meet Virginia Commonwealth, coached by former Gator assistant Anthony Grant, in Sunday’s consolation game off the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. Both coaches had hopes to reach the finals, but VCU suffered a 69-63 loss to Miami in Friday’s semifinals, while No. 18 Arkansas suffered a 67-51 loss … Read More »

Gators have Rutgers ties

by admin

Florida will finish play in the Blue Ribbon Challenge on Saturday at home against Rutgers. For the Gators, there are some significant ties to their opponents from the state university of New Jersey. Florida forward Dan Werner, from Middletown, N.J., made an unofficial visit to the Rutgers campus before accepted a scholarship to North Carolina State. Werner considered Rutgers again when he re-opened his recruiting process, but decided instead to go to Florida. “I thought … Read More »

Class of distinction

by admin

Florida has yet to officially announce its 2008 signing class, but already the group is receiving some national accolades. Scout.com national recruiting analyst Dave Telep rated Florida’s 2008 class eighth in the nation, behind UCLA, Ohio State, Georgetown, Wake Forest, Louisville, North Carolina and Arizona. Van Coleman of CSTV rated the Florida class third. The Florida class of 6-foot-10 center Kenny Kadji, 6-9 forward Eloy Vargas, 6-8 forward Allan Chaney, 6-4 guard Ray Shipman and 5-8 … Read More »

Gotta be the shoes

by admin

When Nick Calathes wore black sneakers during Monday’s exhibition game against Lynn University, he wasn’t trying to be different. The 6-foot-6 Florida freshman couldn’t wear the white Nike-issued sneakers the rest of the team wore because his feet are too narrow. So he borrowed some black sneakers from the training staff. “My foot is kind of weird,” Calathes said. “I need a lighter shoe. I just can’t wear any pair of shoes.” Calathes’ father, John, said that narrow … Read More »

Big Blue Heartache

by admin

At first glance, Kentucky’s 84-68 loss to Gardner-Webb looks to be one of the most embarrassing in the proud program’s history. But was it really that unexpected. When the Wildcats were ranked 20th in the preseason AP poll, I immediately declared to my colleagues that it was a name-brand ranking. As a poll voter, I didn’t pick Kentucky as a preseason top 25 team. I felt Kentucky had many of the same issues as … Read More »

Dialing up the intensity

by admin

Sophomore forward Jonathan Mitchell acknowledged it took a little while for his class to adjust to the intensity of Florida practices this preseason. As a freshman, Mitchell faced high skill in going up against Corey Brewer, Al Horford and Joakim Noah every day. But practices last year had more of a country-club feel in comparison. The reason? “They paid their price already,” Mitchell said. “They knew what it took to win in ‘06 and I guess coming into it Coach knew how to take care of their bodies and they … Read More »
