The sartorial highlight of the first sessions of Southeastern Conference media days was Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl showing his school spirit with an orange blazer.
No, this wasn’t the creamsicle number he wears against Vanderbilt and Kentucky as a tribute to former UT coach Ray Mears. Instead, it was a lighter orange, more tangerine colored.
Pearl said he bought the jacket in the Czech Republic during his team’s European trip over the summer.
“I thought …

It appears that Al Horford is settling in nicely in Atlanta. An article in Tuesday’s Atlanta Journal Constitution said the forward Florida big man who helped lead the Gators to two national titles is adapting quickly to the NBA level.
Atlanta Hawks coach Mike Woodson told the AJC that the 6-foot-9 Horford is “a coach’s dream.”
“This guy accepts coaching,” Woodson told the newspaper. “You can go at him and he responds. He hasn’t had any bad days. You …

Each year, the Southeastern Conference asks writers and columnists who cover the basketball teams throughout the league to vote in its preseason media poll.
They usually hold off until SEC basketball media days, scheduled for next Wednesday and Thursday in Birmingham, Ala. But this year they want us to fax the ballots in by Friday. Why? Maybe for increased participation, or maybe they were tired of the rib stains coming in on my ballot.

“Cake batter, strawberry, I go in there and sample everything,” sophomore forward Jonathan Mitchell said. “I already know what I want but I …

Florida unveiled its 2007-08 basketball media guide Wednesday.
Like last year, a ring graces the cover. Last year’s guide featured the 2006 national championship ring. This year’s guide shows the rings that commemorate the back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007.
The ring is juxtaposed differently this season, more near the bottom of the page compared to the ring being centered a year ago. A dark, shadowed picture of hands in a huddle one on top …

After completing his 2008 class, Florida coach Billy Donovan is again venturing to the New England region to fill a spot in the Class of 2009.
Erik Murphy, a 6-foot-9, 220-pound forward who wears size 15 sneakers, held a private workout last weekend at St. Mark’s School in Southborough, Mass. Donovan was among an A-list group of Division I coaches in attendance, a group that included Boston College’s Al Skinner, Georgia Tech’s Paul Hewitt, UCLA’s Ben …
