Is Billy gone?

by admin

Billy Donovan is reportedly still mulling a contract offer from the Orlando Magic, though a phone conversation between Joakim Noah and Major Parker presented an ominous sign. During the conversation Noah asked Parker, a former Florida player and staff assistant, if he had accepted the coaching job with the Magic. Noah paused, then responded: “Really, he’s about to be eating a lot of filet mignons. Congratulations Coach D. That’s a lot of money. Orlando is a great situation … a great … Read More »

Ex-Gator steals show

by admin

Florida draft hopefuls Taurean Green and Chris Richard lined up on opposite teams during Wednesday’s second NBA predraft camp scrimmage. But it was a former Gator who stole the show. Mohamed Abukar, who transferred from Florida to San Diego State as a sophomore in December of 2004, scored a game-high 16 points. Abukar made five of nine shots and grabbed six rebounds. Green started at the point, finishing with 11 points and three assists in leading his team to an 80-76 win. Green was … Read More »

First impressions

by admin

The Wednesday morning session of the NBA predraft camp was uneventful for former Florida players Chris Richard and Taurean Green. Both took part in morning drill sessions but didn’t play in the morning scrimmage. The 6-foot-8 Richard looks about 10 pounds lighter, the result of intense training in Las Vegas. Richard also showed a nice baseline jumper out to 15 feet he hit consistently when open. Green worked out at the other end of the floor, where he handled the ball well … Read More »

Florida class No. 1

by admin

Even without forward Patrick Patterson, the 2007 Florida recruiting class ended up with the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation according to Rivals.com. The late push to sign McDonald’s All-American point guard Jai Lucas vaulted Florida from fifth to first in the national rankings. Rounding out the class are McDonald’s All-American guard/forward Nick Calathes, forward Chandler Parsons, forward Adam Allen and forward Alex Tyus. In other basketball news, Chris Richard’s agent, Andre Buck, confirmed that Richard will work out at the … Read More »

Is Billy D Disney bound?

by admin

Time to get concerned. The Orlando Magic fired Brian Hill late Tuesday night, leaving an NBA coaching opening down the road for Florida coach Billy Donovan to ponder. If approached, expect Donovan to at least listen to what the Magic have to say. As the folly surrounding Donovan’s contract extension continues to muddle through the “process,” the Florida coach is sounding more and more tired of talking about his contract with the media. On Wednesday, Donovan said he … Read More »

Vitale: Donovan worth it

by admin

A report surfaced last week that Florida coach Billy Donovan was close to signing the richest college contract in college basketball history, a seven-year deal worth an average of $3.5 million. Count ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale as one who thinksDonovan is worth every penny. “When you look at all the fundraisers, the TV revenue that these coaches bring in, they are almost like CEO’s of companies,” Vitale said. “People aren’t going to give you that kind of money unless they … Read More »

Horford hanging around

by admin

While his friends and former classmates are training in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, junior Al Horford has opted to stay in Gainesville to prepare for the NBA draft. The 6-foot-9 Horford has been working out all week at the Florida basketball facility with coach Billy Donovan. Horford, projected as high as the third overall pick in some mock draft Web sites, said he plans to join Florida teammates Joakim Noah and Corey Brewer in Los Angeles next week. “It’s going well,” … Read More »

Big one that got away

by admin

Florida nearly pulled off a recruiting double fantasy this week. Instead, the Gators were left to ponder how power forward PatrickPatterson slipped away. Patterson surprised some Wednesday when he announced his commitment to Kentucky. Many thought it was a foregone conclusion that he would follow friend and recent Florida point guard signee Jai Lucas to Gainesville. In truth, Florida needed Patterson more than Lucas. The 5-foot-10 Lucas may be the eventual successor to the departed Taurean Green at the point, but 6-5 guard/forward … Read More »

A change of heart

by admin

Taurean Green was the last of the Florida juniors to sign with an agent earlier this week when he chose Andy Miller of ASM Sports, whose clients include Kevin Garnett and Chauncey Billups. Florida fans may remember Andy Miller’s name well. He was the same fledgling agent who heavily pursued former Florida standout Mike Miller as an underclassmen following the 1999-2000 season. The unsolicited courting got so intense that Florida coach Billy Donovan threatened to get Miller the agent de-certified. Times have changed. Donovan … Read More »
