Limiting texts long overdue

by admin

When Florida football coach Urban Meyer declared last July he text messaged recruits “as often as possible” he was lauded as an innovative and relentless recruiter. My thoughts turned to the families receiving those messages. At the Florida end, the cost of the text was simply written off in its vast athletic budget. It wasn’t the same for a 17-year-old kid bombarded with hundreds of electronic messages per day on his cell phone. Financial considerations alone make the NCAA’s decision to ban text … Read More »

Powell expected to return

by admin

Brandon Powell’s high school coach, Jerry Johnson, said he expected the 6-foot-3 freshman guard to return to Florida next season. “He wants to be back,” Johnson said. “Unless it’s an academic situation or something, I expect him to come back. We talk on the phone almost every day and he hasn’t said anything about wanting to transfer.” Johnson acknowledged that Powell was having difficulty with an English course this semester. Powell was kept home from Florida’s Feb. 26 game at Tennessee to … Read More »

Starting over next season

With the departure of all four juniors from Florida’s back-to-back championship teams, fans will need to accept 2007-08 as a rebuilding year. Mind you, there’s enough talent left to make the NCAA Tournament. Getting out of the first weekend, though, could prove difficult unless a young, inexperienced group comes together quicker than expected. Here’s my projected Florida starting lineup for 2007-08: Marreese Speights, center – Showed the most promise of Florida’s four freshmen last season, with his ability to rebound and finish … Read More »

A pitch for Jones

by admin

Following Tuesday morning’s Siemens Trophy presentation, a reporter joked if Billy Donovan would speak to Marshall University about its coaching position after his speaking engagement there Wednesday night. “Another rumor,” Donovan replied, laughing. Donovan began his head coaching career at Marshall from 1994-96 before taking Florida to unprecedented heights. Donovan did make a strong pitch for his current associate coach Donnie Jones, who began his coaching career at Marshall as a graduate assistant in 1990 and worked … Read More »

Countdown to championship

by admin

At 85 minutes before tipoff, fans slowly were starting to filter in to the Georgia Dome. Florida is expecting a big turnout from its fans tonight, and judging from the throng of orange and blue clad shirts on the streets of Atlanta, it appears likely that Gator fans will outnumber Ohio State fans. Ohio State guards Mike Conley Jr., Ron Lewis and Jamar Butler were the first to hit the floor. Florida hit the floor … Read More »

Scene and heard

by admin

The Florida team hotel is a Marriott about a half-mile from the Georgia Dome. At 2:30 p.m., a gaggle of Florida fans already were lined up, waiting for autographs. Several parents were in the lobby, including Tito Horford and Sindey Green. But players, preparing for tonight, were nowhere to be found. Everywhere you look, people are selling tickets. One fellow sold a second-deck seat for $200 last night. Florida coach Billy Donovan is scheduled to speak at a Marshall … Read More »
