Keep the field at 65

by admin

To paraphrase a Ron Zookism, watch out for the noise in the system. We’llbe hearing all week about the NCAA Tournament selection committee, theinjustices of teams that didn’t get in (Syracuse, Florida State, Drexel, etc.) and teams that did (Illinois, Arkansas). We’ll also hear the argumentspearheaded by Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim and Kentucky coach Tubby Smiththat the tournament field of 65 needs to be expanded. Don’t buy it. There’sa reason why they call the tournament anthem “One Shining Moment” and not“One … Read More »

Good day for the SEC

by admin

The NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Selection Committee said it doesn’t take conferences into account when drawing up the field of 65 teams. But it’s clear that SEC commissioner Mike Slive, a third-year member of the committee, brought home the bacon. Five bids is a fair number for a league that was second nationally in RPI. The committee stayed true to its word the past two weeks. Conference tournaments mattered. UCLA slipped from a No. 1 to a No. 2 seed because it lost … Read More »

Good seats still available

by admin

If you’re a Florida fan interested in coming to Sunday’s final if the Gators advance, good seats are still available. Florida brought an impressive contingent to the Georgia Dome on Friday night, but Kentucky’s loss in the quarterfinals created more supply than demand. Tickets were being sold for as low as $20 in the lower bowl of the stadium. “When Kentucky loses, this always happens,” one scalper grumbled. “We can’t give them away.”

Tubby’s talent problem

by admin

In the closing seconds of regulation Friday, Mississippi State guard Jamont Gordon raises up over an out-stretched arm, sinks a 24-foot 3-pointer to tie the game and sends the SEC Tournament quarterfinals into overtime. In the closing seconds of overtime, Kentucky guard Joe Crawford is smothered by three defenders, unable to get a partially blocked shot onto the rim. This is why Tubby Smith’s days ay Kentucky are numbered. The 10th-year Kentucky coach has never been able to recruit a game-changer to … Read More »

Back to the Dome

by admin

Now I know what it’s like to be the boy in the bubble. A year after traveling to the music city for the more intimate setting of the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville, Tenn., the SEC Tournament is back in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. It’s kind of like holding a basketball game in an airport hangar. The top of the roof is about 30 stories high. Depth perception for shooters is a problem, but players have adjusted … Read More »

Domeward Bound

by admin

So much for doomsday projections. Florida’s 85-72 thumping of Kentucky has the Gator Nation feeling better about basketball today. Pat Dooley and I will be heading to Atlanta mid-week to prepare for SEC Tournament coverage, which will include some exclusive on-line surprises. Hope you enjoy them as we toil away in the bowels of the Georgia Dome. I like Florida to win the tournament, but I liked Tennessee last season and the Vols flopped in the first round. Tennessee and … Read More »
