White to stick with Hill with game on the line

Brace yourself, Gator fans. If Florida is in another tight ballgame that comes down to a last shot, second-year coach Mike White still trusts the ball in senior point guard Kasey Hill’s hands to make a play. “He won’t settle,” White said. “He’ll go hard to the rim. Some guys, would maybe do a step back 3 in that situation. He’s our second-best passer and he’s a senior, so yeah,  he’s the guy I want in that situation.” Hill was… Read More »

Beyond the arc: 3 takeaways from UF’s 72-62 loss to Vanderbilt

Some observations following UF’s 72-62 overtime loss to Vanderbilt in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament. — Florida took too many wild, off-balanced shots, particularly in the first half when the Gators went just 11 of 33 from the field to fall behind 33-28. Devin Robinson and Kasey Hill took some ill-advised ones and even senior forward Canyon Barry tried to force his own offense into the teeth of Vanderbilt’s defense. Florida finished the game shooting 34.4 percent for the… Read More »

Beyond the arc: 3 takeaways from UF’s 73-71 loss at Vanderbilt.

Some observations following UF’s 73-71 loss at Vanderbilt — Florida sophomore guard KeVaughn Allen went into a fog and lost his aggressiveness after uncharacteristically missing a pair of free throws to start the second half. Allen went 4 of 8 from the floor in the first half, then just 0 of 2 in the second half. “We’ve got to try to have him be more aggressive at all times,” Florida coach Mike White said. — Senior point guard Kasey Hill… Read More »

Beyond the arc: 3 takeaways from Florida’s 78-65 win over Arkansas

Some observations following UF’s 78-65 win over Arkansas at Exactech Arena: — Florida center Kevarrius Hayes played hard inside against the Razorbacks with 6 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. But foul trouble continues to plague the 6-foot-9, 218 pound big man, as Hayes finished with four fouls for the fifth straight game. Teams will continue to go after Hayes, who needs to remain disciplined enough to avoid contact while defending. — For as well as Florida played offensively… Read More »

White talks his stance on working officials

It’s part of basketball. Coaches lobby to get calls. Former Florida coach Billy Donovan was known to get in the ears of officials during his 19-year tenure with the Gators. So far, Florida coach Mike White has been more reticent to get heated about calls or non-calls. White certainly had reason to lobby a few complaints during UF’s 76-66 loss to Kentucky at Rupp Arena on Saturday. Florida was whistled for 22 fouls, compared to 13 fouls called on Kentucky… Read More »

Beyond the arc: 3 takeaways from UF’s 76-66 loss at Kentucky

Some observations following UF’s 76-66 loss to Kentucky at Rupp Arena: — Florida hoisted some ill-advised shots on Saturday at Kentucky. Kasey Hill and Devin Robinson went a combined 5 of 23, with some wild drives. For as well at KeVaughn Allen played offensively, even he took some rushed, off-balance shots down the stretch when Florida was trying to make it a two-possession game. — The backup center-by-committee experiment of Schuyler Rimmer and Keith Stone netted zero points and one… Read More »

The Gators outrebounded the Gamecocks 34-30, though South Carolina had the slight edge on second-chance points (8-6). It was a collective effort, led by seven rebounds from sophomore guard KeVaughn Allen. Center Kevarrius Hayes and forward Devin Robinson had six rebounds apiece. — Redshirt freshman forward… Read More »

Some observations following UF’s 57-52 win at Mississippi State on Saturday. — Florida junior forward Devin Robinson didn’t score against Mississippi State, going 0 of 6 from the field. But credit the 6-foot-8 Robinson for impacting the game with 10 rebounds, two blocked shots and one steal. It’s a sign of Robinson’s continued maturity that he didn’t mope and still played hard with shots not falling for him. — Florida had made such strides in ball movement, but a 5… Read More »

Beyond the arc: 3 takeaways from UF’s 114-95 win over Auburn

Some observations following UF’s 114-95 win over Auburn on Tuesday night: — Credit Kasey Hill for scoring 11 points and posting a career-high 12 assists in the Auburn win. Florida had 10 turnovers in the first half, but was able to pull away by taking care of the ball better in the second half with just 3 turnovers. As… Read More »

For Gators, sharing equals success

Florida was stuck in a rut offensively in mid-January following back to back losses to South Carolina and Vanderbilt. UF’s assist-to-turnover was 20-28 during the two-loss week. The offense was stagnant. Ball movement and player movement wasn’t crisp. Fast-forward close to a month later, and Florida’s ability to share the basketball effectively has fueled its current six-game win streak. The Gators have recorded 99 assists to 71 turnovers during the stretch. Florida had 67 assists in its first six SEC… Read More »
