Selby on radar
In search of future point guard depth, Florida could be honing in on a former Tennessee commitment.
According to ESPN.com’s Dana O’Neil’s twitter page, Florida coach Billy Donovan was among a handful of elite coaches watching 2010 five-star point guard prospect Josh Selby on Thursday at the Reebok Championships in Las Vegas. Also on hand, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, Kansas coach Bill Self and members of Kentucky’s basketball staff.
Selby announced his de-commitment from the Vols on his Facebook page a few weeks ago. Selby’s mother, Maeshon Witherspoon, recently told Rivals.com that his son is still interested in Tennessee.
Selby, a 6-foot-1, 180-pounder from Baltimore, is the seventh rated prospect in the nation and the second-rated point guard in the Class of 2010. Of course, Florida is still in contention for the big prize in the class, top overall point guard and top overall 2010 prospect Brandon Knight of Fort Lauderdale. If Florida fails to land Knight, though, Selby wouldn’t be a bad fallback option.
Knight, by the way, is out for the rest of July after cracking a bone in his foot.
Other recruiting nuggets:
Stacey Poole Jr., a 6-5 swingman from Jacksonville and son of former Gators standout Stacey Poole, is up to No. 21 in the country according to Rivals.com. The younger Poole has received scholarship offers from both Florida and South Carolina.
Florida’s lone current 2010 commitment, forward Patric Young, has moved up to No. 28 in the country according to Rivals.com and is putting together an impressive summer. SI.com’s Seth Davis recently watched Young and compared the 6-foot-8, 220-pound bruiser to both Al Horford and Amare Stoudamire.
According to Davis, Young already is showing signs of physical play underneath that Florida has desperately lacked during its two most recent NIT seasons. Last season, the Gators finished last in the SEC in blocked shots and rebounding. Given those recent struggles, I’m sure Florida coaches are secretly wishing the wide-shouldered Young could arrive in Gainesville a year sooner.
